2017 Motorcycle Events Calendar

Here it is, in one handy place, the 2017 calendar of UK motorcycle events.

Get stuck in to the ice creams and no sniggering at the scooterists.

All prices are on-the-gate prices for a single day visit, unless otherwise stated. Other ticket prices may be available in advance, as well as concessionary prices. See event websites for more details.

Unless there is a show element involved, we haven’t listed autojumbles and swap meets. Likewise, unless there is a hefty bike activities element, we haven’t included many club rallies or biker-only music festivals, unless they’ve got a stonking reputation. This is mainly a list of the larger or more specialist bike-focussed events, plus we’ve added in the major sports bike race events.

If your event isn’t listed, let us know via the Contact Us page, using the ‘editorial’ email address and putting the words Event Listing in the subject line of your email.

11-12 February

The Dragon Rally

Snowdonia, Conway, North Wales (precise details are released nearer the day)

Wikipedia says:
(Attracts] 1,500 to 2,000 riders depending on the weather and location. The rally is famed for its toughness and spartan facilities. Riders often have to endure miserable riding conditions to attend the rally and, once on site, they are expected to camp without regard to the weather conditions. It is an event held in veneration by large numbers of motorcyclists as a test of stamina and endurance because (in the first two decades at least) it was common to have to endure snow and ice to ride there. The Dragon is often grouped with the German Elefantentreffen (Elephant Rally) and the Norwegian Krystall Rally.

Unfortunately the event won’t be going ahead this Winter as there is no suitable date with correct tides,  parking availability ect. before the end of February which is the cut off time when trade concessions build annual temporary structures on the beach. This is a great shame but we are looking at the possibilities of a date later in the year!

There’s plenty of kit to buy and although there’s little info available at the time of writing, last year’s event featured a wall-of death (scary as fuck) and a dirt track complete with race events. Pendine Speed Week,

Pendine Sands, Carmarthen SA33, Wales

A few times a year the Ministry of Defence lets a bunch of speed freaks blast down its 7-mile beach at Pendine in South Wales. The same place Guy Martin did his chase-a-truck-on-a-bicycle lunacy and where Top Gear used to fool around in flashy motors. What else is there to say, really?

26-28 May

The Bike Shed

Tobacco Dock, The Dock Tobacco Quay, Wapping Lane, London. E1W 2SF

We say:
If you are into the new wave custom / retro-resto scene, this is your mecca. 150 shed and pro-built bikes from the biking sub-culture that the big manufacturers are taking very, very seriously (have you seen the BMW R nineT series…?). This event isn’t held as much as curated – the standard of the bikes is always exceptional and if you don’t find the pop up shops and food options to your liking (you will though) you can always head over the the Bike Shed permanent offshoot bar/diner over in Shoreditch, seeing as you’re in town. Highly recommended, as it is on our Bucket List.

Isle of Man TT 2017

Isle of Man, in the middle of the Irish Sea

We say:
Even if sport bikes aren’t your cup of tea, you really have to get yourself to the Island during the festival to experience what some feel is lunacy but we know is actually two weeks of biking nirvana – two weeks when bikers can be together, loved by everyone on the island, not feared, treated to many special events, allowed to go as fast as they like most of the time for miles and miles of beautiful countryside before retiring to the seafront to tell tall tales over the local beer with a curry afterwards. And as a bonus there’s even a bit of racing.

We say:
Having given yourself only 6 weeks’ recuperation time from the Ace’s Southend Shakedown it’s time for another seaside jaunt, this time to that other bastion of biker folklore: Margate. Now, we’ll have none of that mods v rockers nonsense anymore, please. This is a peaceful event, well except the sound of a few thousand exhaust cans, setting off early doors from the Ace Cafe in North London over to the Kent coast. Ice creams all round and no sniggering at the scooterists.

22-25 June

Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood Estate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 0PX

We say:
Yes, we know it’s around 95% things with four wheels and you need a second mortgage to do the thing properly (one day is never enough). But if you are a proper petrolhead you can click on the link below and almost smell the exhaust fumes coming out of the screen. The best bit is you get really close to the machines, as you have the freedom of the paddock. It’s that good, it gives you wood.

Prices: Day: Adults, From £34, Kids 13-21 from £17. Weekend: Adults from £154, Kids 13-21 from £77

National Road Rally 2017

Starting point: Your house

We say:
As this isn’t a single location event it didn’t make the original list but our Facebook followers had a pop, so it’s in. We can’t even begin to explain what the national is, except it’s a scatter rally, and neither can the BMF or ACU in a single paragraph, so head on over to this BMF page. Suffice to say, for those that know about it, it’s big deal and a lot of fun.

Prices: Individual entry £29, Passenger £9

7-8 July (and possibly 9th)

Dirt Quake 6

Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn, PE34 3AG

They say:
Dirt Quake offers the unique opportunity for riders to taste [dirt track] racing on a world class track with hardly any of the expense or hassle normally associated with motorcycle racing. The concept is simple: race anything that could pass an MoT, in the same kit you’d ride on the street in. The race takes place at the Adrian Flux Arena, a track that hosts the Speedway World Cup races and is fully insured, manned by professional medical staff and officiated by the Dirt Track Riders Association and the Motorcycle Federation. Entries open in April.

Prices: TBC

The Great Yarmouth Motorcycle Takeover

Yarmouth Seafront, Great Yarmouth, NR30 2EN

We say:
It started last year with a simple call to get more than 20 people to turn up on a seaside run. It ended with a couple of thousand bikes closing down Yarmouth seafront for the day. This year the event is being run in order to raise funds for East Anglian Air Ambulance and if that’s not reason enough to show up we don’t know what is. Starts 10am.

Prices: Donations welcome

16 July

70’s Bike Day

Ace Cafe, Ace Corner, North Circular Road (A406), NW10 7UD

We say:
Yet again, one of these little Ace days creeps in and once again there’s bloody good reason. Apart from a museum, where else are you going to see a ton of original Z900’s, CB400’s, 550’s and 750’s, Z650’s (got one, thanks) GT 750’s, GS’s, RD’s,XS’s, Fizzie’s and the rest? And that’s just the Jap stuff. They’ll be Bonnie’s, Tridents, Tigers…

Jack Hills Cafe, A5 Watling St, Towcester NN12 8ET

July (Date TBC)

Mallory Bike Bonanza

Mallory Park Circuit, Church Road, Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire, LE9 7QE

We say:
Pity we missed last year’s Bonanza as Isle of Man TT superheroes Michael Dunlop and Ian Hutchinson were sauntering around. Still, there’s enough going on in the Mallory Bike Bonanza without the cells, with static bike displays and track parade sessions plus racing. Off the track there more displays, stalls and bars plus the opportunity to walk around the open paddock as the teams prepare to race. All good fumes-in-the-air stuff.

Prices: Adults from £18, Kids under 16 free.

29-30 July

Aberdare Park National Motorcycle Road Races

Aberdare Park, Glan Road, Aberdare, South Wales, CF44 8LU

We say:
Serious fun this. Modern and classic road racing in a town centre Victorian park, with stalls and more to keep you occupied between the races. Popular with the TT crowd (John McGuinness raced in 2016) this has been a stalwart road race event since the 50’s, with the likes of Surtees, Hailwood, Foggy and Phil Read taking part. Adventure explorer Zoe Cano will also be along this year, proving it’s not just about sporty bikes.

5-6 August

Llangollen Bike Festival

Royal International Pavilion, Llangollen, North Wales

We say:
Only 3 years old and it’s seriously punching above its weight, this one. As well as displays, stunts and the usual fare, last year they managed to get 15 times World Championship titles winner Giacomo Agostini to fly over specially for the event. And because of where it is, the rides are a cut above too.

Prices: Adult £10, Kids 3-12 £5

6-12 August

Ulster GP

Rusheyhill Road, Dundrod, Northern Ireland, BT28 3TB

We say:
Second only to the Isle of Man TT in road racing prestige, the Ulster GP is officially number one when it comes to being the fastest road race in the world. Over 50,000 spectators and the rest of the racing circus descend on this small town and when the racing isn’t on you can ride the course.

Prices: Bike Week Wristband: £25

12 August (TBC)

Bexhill MotoFest

De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN40 1DP

We say:
From the same people behind Bike1066, Bexhill MotoFest moves along the coast and brings a little racing into the action. Sleepy old Bexhill is actually the birthplace of British motor racing. Bexhill was the first British town to embrace racing, in the early 1900’s, and it drew crowds from across the Continent. Such was the town’s popularity, that the racing effectively paid for the iconic De La Warr Pavilion, under which today’s event is now held. The bikes now span pretty much every decade, so there’s something for everyone, held in a gymkhana atmosphere.

10-13 August

The Bulldog Bash

Long Marston Airfield, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, CV37 8LL

We say:
Ahhhh… Bulldog. Hairy beyond belief, what’s not to love about a bike festival that has its own 1/4 mile drag strip and Wall of Death? Stunts, burnouts, metal bands – the website says kids are welcome, “but please be aware they may see drunken people and hear bad language.” You know what it is. It’s just a pity that you have to leave your actual bulldog at home.

Prices: Adults £50 (£30 earlybird online), Kids under 15 free

M&P Open Weekend

A number of bikes are available to jump on and ride out, so just tell the other half you are going on a test ride and have a fun day out.

12-13 August (TBC)

Motorcycle Rider Weekend

RAF Shawbury, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY4 4DZ

We say:
See, this is what our taxes should be used for more: turning RAF airfields into bike tracks for the day. This 3.2 mile track is made available and has been, “custom designed with the motorcyclist in mind, and features a mixture of sweeping bends, fast straights, and complex chicanes, with something to appeal to every rider… the layout provides sufficient variety to keep riders interested, yet is short enough that it can be learnt and ridden close to perfection within the day.” Can’t say fairer than that, and the non-riders are kept happy too, with stalls, food, bouncy castles (and sumo suits!) and more.

Prices: Riders £65 per day (TBC), Spectators £5, Kids under 10 free

BikeSafe Show and Track Experience

Rockingham Circuit, Mitchell Road, Corby, Northamptonshire, NN1 5AF

We say:
Believe us, this is not as lame as it might sound by the title. First, you get a 2 to 1 assessment with a highly trained police motorcyclist for an hour. They’ll get your riding, positioning and awareness skills up and no, speed limits aren’t the issue here. Then, as long as you’ve pre-booked, you can get on the Rockingham track with the California Superbike School for just £35. Told you, didn’t we? You have to be quick though, the slots book up quickly.

19 August – 1 September

Classic TT

Isle of Man, in the middle of the Irish Sea

We say:
If you can’t make to the TT ‘proper’ this is the next best thing as you still get the festival atmosphere and you still get plenty of bike going hell-for-leather around the TT course. In fact, some argue it’s better – easier to get to and the Main TT doesn’t have the Festival of Jury, where tens of thousands of TT goers and locals alike gorge on a diet of superb machinery, some of more modern than you might realise. It’s easier to get over the island for the Classic TT too.

Prices: Grandstand tickets from £3

25-27 August

Thunder in the Glens

MacDonald Aviemore Resort, Aviemore, Scotland, PH22 1PN

We say:
Primarily a music festival run by the Dunedin Chapter of the Harley Owners Group, there is much more to Thunder in the Glens than a few great bands (Big Country last year, no less). Assuming you can take your eyes off the local scenery, there are biking demos (if you don’t turn up on a Hog you can try one), custom shows and the highlights of the biking aspect of the weekend, mass ride-outs (puts the thunder in Thunder in the Glens).

2 September (TBC)

Grampian Motorcycle Convention

Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, AB33 8AE

We say:
Having only a small figure-of-eight track to work with doesn’t hold this event back. Not wide enough to race? Then hold a pursuit race, two at a time with half a lap to chase. Or hold a scooter race. Or use a bit of the edges and let the Supermoto guys have some fun. They really make the most of what they have and as well as the sports events, there’s plenty else to tune in to, including guest appearances plus displays and trade zones.

Prices: Adult £10, Kids under 16 £5, Family £25

The Steve Henshaw 67th International Gold Cup Road Races

Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO11 2YW

We say:
Known simply as ‘Scarborough’, even though the Oliver’s Mount road race circuit holds other events throughout the year, the Gold Cup is the mainland’s answer to the TT. Some even refer to it as the TT by the sea, but erm, the Isle of Man is surrounded by sea. Clue’s in the name, surely? The racing attracts all of the senior road racers and many short circuit champions too – this is the year’s major event.

Prices: Adults from £20, Kids under 15 free

23-24 September

Kickback Festival of Bikes

Centaur Auditorium, Cheltenham Racecourse, Gloucestershire

We say:
This is the second of Kickback’s shows this year and they’ve moved this show over from London. Perfectly formed, with the best custom and retro-resto/new wave ‘shed-built’ bikes, it doesn’t (or hasn’t yet) reached the scale of the Bike Shed events, but for sheer quality this show is a must for anyone who is interested in bike engineering and creativity.

Prices: Adults £9.50, Kids under 14 £2 (TBC)

We say:
The biggie, billed as the UK’s largest motorcycle show by the organiser. As well as an indoor track area offering ride experiences there are outside ride zones, so it’s easy to find yourself on a bike. Stunt shows and displays, talks, bike builds, challenges and special exhibitions means Motorcycle Live always feels more special then the other big shows. All the manufacturers will be there plus masses of traders. A big day out all right.
